Dti wants to tailor support to film industry

SAPA reports that Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies told Parliament’s portfolio committee on trade and industry last week that they are trying to deepen the presence of the film industry in South Africa and tailor their support to it.

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) supports the film industry through an incentive system that offers rebates on Qualifying South African Production Expenditure (QSAPE).

Davies noted that they supported recent Hollywood film Safe House, starring Denzel Washington, because Cape Town was featured as itself. He wants the industry to move away from “locations trying to be something else’.

He also said that the dti was working to convince filmmakers to credit the department at the beginning of the films they support, rather than at the end.
