In chilling news for anyone who believes in freedom of expression, The Telegraph reports that the Iranian government is taking steps to lock down its local film industry.
The ministry of culture has shut down Tehran’s House of Cinema, an institute that promotes Iranian-made films.
Screen Africa readers will recall that banned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been under house arrest in Tehran since May 2010.
It’s worth noting that Iran’s entry into the foreign film category of the Oscars, Separation, is about a couple divided by the wife’s desire to flee the country.
