According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Entertainment has sent a letter to theatre owners saying that as from May 2012 it will cease to pay for 3D glasses for its 3D releases.
It is speculated that other major Hollywood studios may follow suit.
Meanwhile, theatre owners have already invested huge amounts of money in converting their screens and projectors to 3D, so they are not likely to be happy about Sony’s letter.
The Hollywood Reporter estimates that the cost of 3D glasses amounts to about 50% of the theatre ticket.
Sony and other studios reportedly want movie goers to purchase and keep their 3D glasses for re-use.
