South African art house movie circuit, Ster-Kinekor Nouveau, is screening some of the 2011 Foreign Film Oscar Nominees including, Biutiful, Incendies, Outside the Law and In a Better World.
Staring Javier Barden, of No Country for Old Men fame, Biutiful is the story of Uxba, a single father who struggles to resolve the difficulties in his life amid the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona, while dealing with the fact that he has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Biutiful opened on 22 July at Nouveau Cavendish, Rosebank and Brooklyn.
Incendies (Scorched) runs from 19 August and presents the powerful portrayal of twins Jeanne and Simon’s journey to the Middle East in search of their roots while encountering both hatred and love. The detective style plot unravels a mystery which their mother “bequeathed’ to them in her will. According to David Gritten of the UK Telegraph “Incendies is a remarkable and intelligent film about family and conflict, with outstanding performances from Villenueve’s leading cast.’
The controversial Outside the Law directed by Rachid Bouchareb tells the story of three Algerian brothers in France and is set against the backdrop of the Algerian independence movement and the Algerian War. Outside the Law screens from 30 September.
In a Better World will hit the big screen on 25 November and is a gripping story of two families and spans the frightening world of a refugee camp in the Sudan to the reality of life in a Danish town. An extraordinary friendship develops between two boys but soon friendship develops into a dangerous association that sees both bullying and physical violence addressed and an ultimately breath-taking pursuit in which life is at stake. Described as extraordinary and heart wrenching, the movie is directed by the acclaimed Susanne Bier.
