South African President Jacob Zuma caused controversy and became a trending topic on Twitter on Friday when he tweeted about a sitcom starring two of his daughters.

It’s For Life premiered on Mzansi Magic on Friday 15 July and features Gugulethu Zuma as Coco and Nokuthula Zuma as Jabu. The sitcom revolves around the lives, loves, relationships and dramas of four twenty-something women.

Zuma tweeted from his official account, @SAPresident: “I encourage you all to tune into channel 107 Tonight on dstv at 7pm for a new sitcom ‘it’s for life’ it promises to be great #itsforlife”.

The move prompted jokes, disbelief and even a conspiracy theory. According to TimesLive @Duranv tweeted: “the President engineered the fuel crisis so that we have no option but to stay at home and watch his daughters on TV”.

Nokuthula Zuma was seen in the award winning one-woman show Tin Bucket Drum in 2010, while Gugulethu Zuma has had roles in TV shows Interrogation Room and Isidingo.
