Dr Sethe Patricia Makhesha, John Sembie Danana, Adv Cawekazi Benedicta Mahlati and Lumko Caesario Mtimde have been appointed by President Jacob Zuma to the Board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation for a term ending on 9 June 2015.
They replace the members of the Board who resigned last year, namely Felleng Sekha, Barbara Masekela, David Niddrie and Makgatho Mello.
The appointment was made in terms of Section 13(1) read with 13(8) of the Broadcasting Act of 1999.
“I wish them all the success in this important endeavour and I am certain that they are aware of the immense responsibility the nation has placed on them, to serve the country through our national broadcaster, the SABC,’ said President Zuma.
The four new Board members take office at a time when the SABC is still in the throes of a severe financial crisis and trying to recover from years of executive management crises. Senior SABC executives and the Board are currently in the process of finalising a turnaround strategy, a process that has been criticised by unions who maintain that they have not been sufficiently consulted in the process.
