Official titles and release dates have been announced for Peter Jackson’s two upcoming movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, a prequel to The Lord of the Rings.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first will be called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will be released on 14 December 2012, while the sequel will be known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again and will release on 13 December 2013. The cast will see Ian McKellen return as Gandalf the Grey, as well as Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
Following the announcement 20th Century Fox pushed back the release date of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi by one week, from 14 December 2012 to 21 December 2012 to avoid competing with The Hobbit.
