An article in the City Press estimates that South Africa’s political parties have spent R20m on advertising in electronic media in the run-up to the country’s Local Government Elections on 18 May. The biggest spender in this regard is the Democratic Allaince (DA).
However, although the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has not spent as much as the DA on television advertising, it is getting by far the most coverage in the media.
Not only has public service broadcaster SABC benefited from the ad boom resulting from electioneering, so too has the TV ad sector, which can charge between R1.5m and R2m for a good quality ad.
