According to The Sowetan boxer Jacob “Baby Jake’ Matlala and Tshele Kometsi are creating a boxing reality show based on the ESPN hit The Contender.
Through King of the Ring they hope to find and train promising fighters, but Matlala says their programme will also teach the fighters financial and life skills, social responsibility and self-maintenance.
The show will be produced by the Baby Jake Production Company, co-owned by Matlala and his wife Mapule.
Matlala told The Sowetan that they have been given the go-ahead by Boxing South Africa, and that they have a sponsor whose name can’t be disclosed yet. They have also approached the SABC about broadcasting the show, and are waiting for feedback.
Matlala recently made headlines because of his ill health and financial troubles.
