Four films with multiple Oscar nominations (including Best Film) are currently on the South African circuit and doing well.
The King’s Speech (25 prints), starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter (all of whom are nominated in the acting categories) made the number three spot in the Combined Top 10 for the weekend of 18 to 20 February. It made R797,722 over the weekend and has accumulated R2.1m since its release on 11 February.
Black Swan (25 prints), starring the Oscar-nominated Natalie Portman, made the number seven spot in the Combined Top 10 by grossing R465,026 over the weekend. It has made R2.5m since its release on 4 February.
127 Hours (18 prints), starring the Oscar-nominated James Franco, made the number 10 spot in the Combined Top 10. It made R231,409 in its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, True Grit (12 prints), starring the Oscar-nominated Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, made the number four spot on the UIP Top 8 in this, its opening weekend. It made R220,857.
