Cinema Nouveau’s National Theatre Live season

Derek Jacobi’s hugely acclaimed performance as Shakespeare’s King Lear in the Donmar Warehouse theatre’s sell-out production, which was filmed live on HD in London’s Covent Garden, will be screened for four nights at South Africa’s Cinema Nouveau theatres on 26 and 27 February and 2 and 3 March.

Directed by Michael Grandage, the cast includes Pippa Bennett-Warner (Cordelia), Ron Cook (The Fool), Paul Jesson (Gloucester), Gwilym Lee (Edmund), Gina McKee (Goneril), Justine Mitchell (Regan) and Alec Newman (Edgar). This production has received rave reviews from the London press.

One of the greatest works in western literature, King Lear explores the very nature of human existence: love and duty, power and loss, good and evil.

National Theatre Live performances are filmed live in high definition and broadcast via satellite to over 300 cinemas around the world, live in Europe and some US cities, and time-delayed in countries further afield. There are over 75 venues in the UK alongside venues in the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Scandinavia and Europe. The performances are nominated in advance to allow cameras greater freedom in the auditorium.

Derek Jacobi’s long and distinguished career includes his Olivier Award-winning performance as Malvolio in Michael Grandage’s production of Twelfth Night (Donmar West End) and A Voyage Round My Father (Donmar and Wyndham’s Theatre). Jacobi’s other theatre work includes Don Carlos (Sheffield Crucible and Gieldgud Theatre), The Tempest (Sheffield Crucible and Old Vic) – both directed by Michael Grandage, and Hollow Crown (RSC).  Renowned for his role as Claudius in I Claudius, his recent screen credits include Gosford Park and Gladiator.

King Lear runs for approximately three hours 15 minutes, including pre-show and interval.
