Through Ster-Kinekor Theatres’ Vision Mission Eye Care Project, 200 schoolchildren in Mitchells Plain will receive what for many will be their first pair of spectacles at the Promenade Cinema before being treated to a special screening of the Disney animated movie, Tangled.
As Ster-Kinekor’s flagship corporate social investment initiative, Vision Mission identifies disadvantaged learners with visual problems across the country, before fitting them with the proper glasses.
The Vision Mission initiative is being undertaken in partnership with the Jonga Trust, which comprises optometrists, nurses and the national departments of health and basic education. The Jonga Trust has been conducting eye tests at schools in the Mitchell’s Plain area during January and February, and has identified 200 children with visual impediments who will be invited to the special movie screening.
This ongoing campaign is aimed at eliminating easily treatable eye problems in underprivileged communities, as well as raising awareness of poor vision as a major public health challenge in South Africa. Already, thousands of children have been provided with spectacles, vastly improving their education prospects and their quality of life.
