Italy may be in the news for all the wrong reasons at the moment due to its prime minister, media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, being embroiled in an escalating sex scandal, but at least the country’s domestic cinema sector is healthy.
National film body ANICA reports that Italian cinema reached record highs at the box office in 2010 with the overall revenue rising 17.9% over 2009 to reach €734.2m. Some of these profits are attributed to 3D releases such as Avatar.
The number of films produced in 2010 (141 titles including co-productions) is 10 more than the previous year.
