The big screen adaptation of South African John van de Ruit’s much love bestseller, Spud, went straight to the top of the local box office in its opening weekend (3 to 5 December) – it made a huge R2.8m and was released with 83 prints.
Spud bumped former number one, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (111 prints) from its dominant position into second place in the combined Top 10. Harry Potter made R1.9m over the weekend, in its second week of release. The film’s cumulative box office is R9.4m.
And, as if that wasn’t enough good news for South African films, the Afrikaans language musical, Liefling (90 prints), is continuing its fantastic run at the box office. It had made a phenomenal R7m as at 5 December, after only three weeks of release.
