The 48-hour film project has come to Johannesburg. Producer Chule Gobodo of Johannesburg-based 48HFP, says his company will host this international film competition in South Africa.

“The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which a team of filmmakers make a movie — write, shoot, edit and score it — in just 48 hours,’ says Gobodo.

All creativity, writing, shooting, editing and adding a musical soundtrack, must occur in a 48 hour window beginning on a Friday evening at 7pm and ending on Sunday at 7pm. The teams won’t know what genre (thriller/comedy etc) they will be shooting until the start of the competition. The films must also include randomly selected lines of dialogue, props and characters. After the films are complete, they are shown in a local theatre and judged.

Johannesburg  is one of 80 cities worldwide to be included in the 48 Hour Film Project’s expanded 2010 tour, which will include the first-ever local contests in such far-flung cities as Beijing, Lisbon, and Mumbai

The project was founded by Mark Ruppert in Washington DC in May 2001. In 2009, nearly 40,000 filmmakers made 3,000 films in 75 cities.

Films will be screened to the public on the 13 and 14 October at the Rosebank Cinema Nouveau where the audience will select the best film. The winners will then be in the running for top honors at Filmapalooza, the 48 Hour Film Project’s annual awards event honouring the year’s top films, which will take place in 2011. Films will also compete to be among 14 films to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner in 2011

“This will be the first time the competition is held in South Africa and will be monumental in developing the South African film industry and encouraging film makers to tell their stories,’ says Gobodo.

There will be a meet-and-greet event/ workshop for filmmakers on 11 September where they can gain more information about 48HP events. The event will be held at the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg at 9.30am.

The Filming Kick-off-Teams event to find out more about the elements (genre,
prop etc.) to be included in films will be held on 1 October. The venue is still to be confirmed.
