South Africa’s Department of Communications (DoC) will host the Local Content Summit on 6 and 7 May at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways, Johannesburg. The purpose of the Summit is to discuss various mechanisms to unlock the potential of the local content industry to drive economic growth and create jobs.

The Summit will further refine and finalise the draft local content development strategy released by the Department in 2009. Policy makers, regulators, content creators, aggregators and distributors, broadcasters, funders, IP specialists, and academics, both locally and in the SADC region, are expected to attend.

Says Minister of Communications, General (Ret) Siphiwe Nyanda: “The Summit comes at an opportune moment given the gradual economic recovery from the harshness of recession wherein the content industry was also affected quite considerably.’

Key amongst strategic issues to be discussed includes the following:

  • Integration and harmonisation of local content policies to foster transformation and attract investment in the sector;
  • Unlocking the potential and constraints of content commissioning business practices;
  • Comprehensive support for emerging content creators;
  • The (in)adequacy of existing content regulatory instruments;
  • Digital Rights management regime;
  • De-centralising content production to boost economic activities in predominantly rural provinces;
  • Fostering and creating borderless content market in the SADC region.
  • Details of the Summit are as follows:

    Venue: Indaba Hotel,
    Fourways, Johannesburg
    Date: 06-07 May 2010
    Time: 08h00
