In an encouraging sign, UK broadcaster Channel 4 has increased the annual budget of its movie production arm, Film4, by 20% to £10m. This is the same as Film4’s pre-recession budget.

According to The Guardian, new Channel 4 CE David Abraham said Channel 4’s investment in British film "would continue to sit at the heart of Channel 4’s public service mission’.

Film4 has been in existence for 28 years and prides itself on having played a distinctive role in the UK’s creative culture.

It has two new movies – Mike Leigh’s Another Year and Hideo Nakata’s Chatroom – and a short film, Scott Graham’s Native Son, in official selection at this year’s Cannes film festival, which starts next week.
