Kathryn Bigelow’s multiple Oscar-winning film (including Best Film), The Hurt Locker, made R1.2m in its first two weeks on the South African cinema circuit. This is a good result for the low budget, masterful Iraq war drama, which is by no means a mainstream release.
Another example of Oscar’s influence at the box office is The Blind Side, the film for which Sandra Bullock won her Best Actress award. It has made R4.9m in three weeks.
