The new South African film, White Lion, made R273,503 in its opening weekend (19 to 21 February) on the local box office, making it number 2 in Ster-Kinekor’s Top 8 and number 10 in the Combined Ster-Kinekor, UIP and Nu Metro Top 10. The film is on a 49-print release.
Meanwhile, Oscar contender and the world’s highest ever grossing film, Avatar, had reached R51m on the South African box office as at 21 February. According to www.boxofficemojo.com, Avatar’s global box office currently stands at $2.4bn.
The romantic comedy with the star-studded ensemble cast, Valentine’s Day, was the top earner at the South African box office for the weekend in question, with Avatar, which has been on release for 10 weeks, in second spot. Valentine’s Day’s combined box office after two weeks was R3.6m.
In third spot was the adventure fantasy Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, followed by The Princess and the Frog and new release, Wolfman.
