James Cameron’s mega 3D epic Avator has become the fastest film to reach box office earnings of R27m in South Africa in 25 days. Cameron already holds the record for the highest grossing film in worldwide in history, namely Titanic.
As per 20TH Century Fox and sub-distributor Nu Metro Films, Avatar is showing at 24 3D sites and 73 2D sites in Johannesburg and is the country’s widest 3D release to date.
“The film has had a phenomenal hold since its opening with audiences applauding after the film ends. We have also seen good repeat business and the word of mouth on Facebook and Twitter has been nothing short of brilliant,’’ commented Michelle Steytler, Fox Representative for South, East and West Africa.
Avatar currently boasts a global box office of $1.6bn and rising. The film has also scooped four Golden Globe nominations including Best Motion Picture in the Drama category and Best Director for a Motion Picture.
