The website of the South African Screen Federation (www.sasfed.org) reports that the SABC interim board has committed to paying independent producers the outstanding amounts owed to them by the crisis-stricke public broadcaster.

This follows a recent meeting held between the board and members of the TV Industry Emergency Coalition (TVIEC) and the board. The TVIEC estimates that about R22m will have to be paid out by the SABC between now and the end of November.

Meanwhile, the TVIEC is meeting with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the parliamentary portfolio committee regarding the possibility of distress funding.
The TVIEC’s membership comprises SASFED, IPO (Independent Producers Organisation), TPA (The Producers Alliance), DFA (Documentary Filmmakers Association), WGSA (Writers Guild of South Africa) as well as the CWU (Creative Workers Union).
