Pat Younge, who is to take over as head of BBC Vision Productions in January 2010, is set to be the highest placed black executive in the British TV industry.
Speaking at an event last week organised by the Black and Asian Programme Makers Collective, he said: “There has been a lot of pressure for change over the years from outside the industry, but there’s been no internal pressure, which is what will bring about progress. At The Edinburgh TV Festival last year, I said senior executives should be held to account and lose their jobs if they fail to meet diversity targets. Diversity will be a big focus for me when I return to the corporation.’
Younge’s opinions are said to matter so there may be some changes ahead on the issue of diversity.
