SABC staff demand intervention

In the latest episode of the continuing saga of embattled public broadcaster SABC, senior staff have reportedly compiled a memorandum calling for a commission of enquiry into the SABC’s current woes, which has seen the suspension and subsequent re-instating of Group CEO Dali Mpofu, the suspension of head of News Dali Mpofu, and the narrow escape of the SABC board from a vote of no confidence by parliament.

As per the memorandum, senior SABC staff criticise the board’s “interfering’ behaviour with executive management. An article in The Times quotes an unnamed SABC executive talking about the disillusionment among mid-level management, and fears of a mass exodus of skilled staff from the broadcaster.

The SABC’s troubles are the result of a political power struggle between ANC factions supporting President Thabo Mbeki on the one hand, and ANC Party President Jacob Zuma on the other, both of whom want control of the broadcaster.
