A whopping and unprecedented R10m will be up for grabs in pay-TV broadcaster M-Net’s newest game show. To be screened weekly on Sundays at 6pm from August, Power of 10 is an international format created by Sony Pictures, to be produced locally by Johannesburg-based Rapid Blue.
The show is based on people’s perceptions about the world they live in. According to M-Net’s head of Original Productions Carl Fischer, Power of 10 is taking the world by storm. “This global smash hit has already been produced in Australia, Columbia, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Russia, Sweden and the USA and has also received critical acclaim. Earlier this month, it scooped the award for the world’s Best Game Show at the Rose D’Or in Lucern, Switzerland.’
Fischer notes that game shows have proved to be “a sure-fire hit with M-Net audiences’. Apart from the attraction of the R10m prize money, the show will reveal what South Africans really think about a variety of topics.
Contestants will not be required to be quiz show whizzes – they will need only to tap into the mindsets of fellow South Africans and answer questions based on national polls compiled by a market research company. In other words, contestants will have to accurately predict what percentage of South Africans answered each particular question in the poll (eg. What percentage of South Africans have used load shedding as an excuse for arriving late at work?). Audience and family member/ friend participation is a feature of the show.
