AMC Entertainment, one of the world’s largest cinema chains, has signed an exclusive deal with IMAX Corp to convert 100 US IMAX theaters into digital 3-D venues. Projector equipment alone will cost $50m.
Tickets for the giant-screen 3-D auditoriums will cost an extra $2 to $4. Besides the 3-D projection, the IMAX theatres will have larger screens, surround sound and larger seats.
This expansion will effectively double the number of large-format 3-D outlets in America. (Source: New York Times)
