New DVR technology threatens copyright

According to hollywoodreporter.com, a major hullabaloo has broken forth in the US with cable operator Cablevision Systems Corp’s planned trial run of a new remote-storage digital video recorder (RS-DVR).

The problem is that Cablevision’s new RS-DVR makes a copy of any TV show a subscriber might want and then stories it at Cablevision’s central servers, instead of in the set top box as in other DVRs.

Virtually ever major media company including Walt Disney Co. CBS Corp and 20th Century Fox has joined in a lawsuit against Cablevision. Content owners believe that the RS-DVR is a copyright-infringing video-on-demand service.
