In a week dominated by news of controversial paintings of Presidents and tins of paint splish-sploshed over exposed offending bits, not to mention the fall-out between ruling party fans vs supporters of artistic freedom, it's easy to be distracted from the really important things in life. Important from an industry perspective that is – like proactive participation at the most famous film festival in the world, international awards for local TV productions, and gearing up for an all-important finance and co-production market.
It's comforting to know that South Africa is making a big splash at this week's Cannes Film Festival, not only in terms of the large number of filmmakers attending and all the many new films that are being showcased. Additionally a co-production treaty with Ireland was signed at Cannes on Monday, giving South African filmmakers even more opportunity to enter into international co-productions....Read more Joanna Sterkowicz
