Find your voice as a creative writer

Tue, 17 Jan 2012 11:49

Aspirant writers who would like to sharpen their creative skills and explore their writer’s voice should join The Writing Studio’s THE WRITE VOICE workshop at Homebrew Films in Gardens, Cape Town on Saturday, 28 January and 4 February from 2pm until 5pm.

The Writing Studio’s two-Saturday creative writing workshop takes aspirant writers through the paces of what it takes to be a writer in South Africa and how to turn inspiration into reward.

The Write Voice is aimed at storytellers who would like to sharpen their creative skills and takes writers through the writing process, from the inception of an idea, to selecting the right medium for your story. It empowers writers to make the right choices and take ownership of their writing; master the craft of writing for different mediums (from articles to short stories, from novels to plays and films); develop an understanding of what and who you are writing about; and how to change chaos into completed projects that is publisher-and-producer friendly.

It is a motivational and inspirational workshop that is ideal for writers who find it difficult to start writing, not sure what medium to write for, or what to write.

During the workshop the writers will write a short story that will be READ during the last session. There will also be several practical writing exercises guaranteed to trigger the creative process.

The workshop is presented by Daniel E. Dercksen, who has done more than 800 practical and motivational workshops in creative writing and scriptwriting throughout South Africa during the past 18 years; and as a published playwright, screenwriter and movie journalist, with more than 30 years experience, he writes regular interviews and features on a freelance basis.

The cost of the workshop is R950, with a discounted rate of R850 for students, scholars and pensioners.  Bursaries are available on discretion for disadvantaged writers.

As a leading independent training initiative, The Writing Studio empowers writers and filmmakers and fosters the growth of the film and television industries, theatre, journalism and publishers in South Africa.

The Writing Studio is committed to the art of writing and the craft of storytelling, turning ideas into words, and words into images and action.
