Arkivum, which offers the only archiving solution to provide 100% guaranteed data integrity, has selected IBM to provide the tape technology required to grow its business.
The archiving specialist will use IBMs tape library and drive technology as an integral part of its ultra-dependable A-Stor solution. According to global market intelligence firm IDC, the demand for storage worldwide is expected to grow by 49.8% a year until 2014 and, with this in mind, Arkivum introduced A-Stor as a potential solution to this growing demand.
A-Stor is a highly cost-effective service that uses industry-leading LTO/LTFS data tape technology and open standards to deliver fast and efficient online access. It is the only storage solution based on tape.
We examined a variety of tape library providers, extensively testing them all on a number of metrics including, storage density, price, reliability and expandability, explains Arkivum CEO, Jim Cook. It was soon clear that IBM had the superior product we were looking for, and, in particular, they were able to offer the capability to expand the library through a combination of LTO and IBM Enterprise Drive technology, using LTO5 and TS1140 tape drives.
Tape is still by far the best medium for cost-effective, long-term storage and its exactly this that enables us to offer our 100% data integrity guarantee.
The deal opens doors for businesses to have fractional ownership of a sophisticated tape library. Peter McNamara, IBMs UK Data Protection & Retention Sales Manager, says: With high capacity and fast access to data, our tape library technology is ideal for Arkivum, as it offers security, reliability and expandability. We hope to build a strong relationship with Arkivum that will benefit their current and future customers.
