South Africa’s Department of Communications (DoC) has teamed up with radio station Good Hope FM and the South African Post Office for the “Operation Warmer Winter” Blanket Campaign.

This initiative follows the 2011 Budget Vote Speech delivered in Parliament on 31 May by Minister of Communications, Radhakrishna L. Padayachie (Roy), under the theme: Taking technology to the people in service of the people, where the Minister called on players in the ICT Sector to donate blankets to the poor and destitute.

The Minister will launch the campaign on Thursday, 23 June at the Ekuphumleni Frail Aged Care Centre in Gugulethu, in the Western Cape.

Minister Padayachie will hand over 300 blankets to the Centre, an Old Age Home, which looks after 134 elderly people, some who are wheelchair bound and others who can only walk with the aid of a walking stick. Of these, 96 are frail (8 partially blind; 3 totally blind; 15 diabetics and 58 wheelchair bound).
