PBS stations back to school drive

In partnership with SABC Education, SABC Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) radio stations Limpopo Combo: Munghana Lo Nene (ML), Phala Phala FM and Thobela FM, have embarked on a back to school drive to support the readiness of learners as they commence the 2012 academic year.
ML has a hot line up for the entire month of January. Education producers, station representatives, and radio personalities will visit three schools in Limpopo to donate five refurbished computers sponsored by SABC. The station is also campaigning for school uniforms for the needy which will be donated to deserving learners in February.
In addition the station will interview Department of Education personnel on late admissions or registration at public schools, stationery distribution and school fees. There will be an episode which will feature a dietitian who will focus on nutritional food for learners, eating patterns, food allergies, etc. In another episode general practitioners will look at the treatment of any outbreak at school or pre-schools etc. Financial advisers will look at how to fund high school education and plan for post high school. The station will round out the month looking at how to deal with subject choices on the learners support slot.
On 18 January Phala phala FM visited several primarly and seconday schools where they reported a huge turnover of learners. At certain schools learners were still looking for admission. The station is urging listeners to donate school shoes for the needy in which to date they have received a number of pairs with other listeners calling in pledging their support.
Thobela FM will be visiting schools and conducting interviews with experts in education. The station will focus on subject choice, critical content areas of the curriculum and how to write an application letter for admittance in institution of Higher Learning.
The three stations together with Ikwekwezi Fm, Lesedi FM, Ukhozi FM, Ligwalagwala, Motsweding and Umhlobo we Nene are broadcasting the Matric Second Chance project funded by SAQA and Department of Higher Education and Training during January.
On Educator Development the focus will be on the new curriculum (CAPS), looking at the Foundation Phase and assessing the readiness from teachers. Educators received training during the holidays and the programme will get views from educators and experts about the new curriculum.
