British film policy review

Cineuropa reports that UK Minister for the Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, has announced a major review of British film policy that will identify barriers to growth and prioritise building a more successful British film industry.

According to Vaizey, despite this being an excellent year for British film at award ceremonies (ie. most notably multiple Oscar wins for The King’s Speech), British filmmaking is still not as profitable as it should be for local filmmakers.

An eight-strong independent panel of film industry experts has been appointed to consult with industry stakeholders so as to create a new policy framework that will support British film. Funding for British film will increase by about 60% by 2014, to around £43m a year.

The British Film Institute, which has taken over the duties of the defunct UK Film Council, will be responsible for setting and implementing detailed delivery plans within the new policy framework.
