Three-in-one East African service provider Zuku, part of the Wananchi Group, has signed a carriage agreement with the African Movie Channel (AMC) to screen Nollywood and other top quality movies from the continent.
As per the on-going agreement, AMC launched on Zuku at the beginning of February.
Filling a gap in the market since the closure of HiTV, the deal between Zuku and AMC puts Nollywood movies back into East African living rooms.
Hannelie Bekker, Managing Director of Wananchi Programming says; The unfortunate demise of HiNolly created a gap in our line-up that consumers were quick to respond to. AMC has proven its ability to aggregate the best movies, and perform very efficient quality assurance and rights management, so we are very happy to be working with AMC to provide content our subscribers clearly want.
Nollywood movies are hugely popular with East African audiences, and the collaboration with AMC demonstrates Zukus ongoing commitment to provide content that matters to its subsribers.
AMC started in 2006 as an on-demand service for Africans in the UK on the then Homechoice TV platform, and quickly evolved into an on-demand service for Africans on the continent and the Diaspora. This is still a core part of its business, but enormous interest has led to the launch in May 2011 of a stand-alone linear TV channel, as well as programming sales to other broadcasters.
Yinka Mayungbo, one of the founding directors of African Movie Channel says; The deal with Zuku is an exciting move, and we are delighted to be developing a partnership with them. The agreement adds to the other strong content and platform partnerships AMC has established, which ensures that it continues to consistently offer the best African movies across all distribution platforms. We look forward to a enjoying a long partnership with Zuku.
