Awards season kicks off

A whole spate of Hollywood awards events take place at this time of the year in a run up to the Academy Awards (Oscars) in February.

The biggest pre-Oscars event is the Golden Globes and the 69th edition takes place in Los Angeles on Sunday, 15 January.

The French black and white silent film The Artist has scooped six Golden Globe nominations, with The Help and George Clooney’s The Descendants earning five nominations each. Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris received four nominations.

Here are some of the main category nominations:

Best Drama: "The Descendants," "The Help," "Hugo," "The Ides of March," "Moneyball," "War Horse."

Best Picture, Musical or Comedy: "50/50," "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "Midnight in Paris," "My Week with Marilyn."

Actor, Drama: George Clooney, "The Descendants"; Leonard DiCaprio, "J. Edgar"; Michael Fassbender, "Shame"; Ryan Gosling, "The Ides of March"; Brad Pitt, "Moneyball."

Actress, Drama: Glenn Close, "Albert Nobbs"; Viola Davis, "The Help"; Rooney Mara, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"; Meryl Streep, "The Iron Lady"; Tilda Swinton, "We Need to Talk About Kevin."


Actor, Musical or Comedy: Jean Dujardin, "The Artist"; Brendan Gleeson, "The Guard"; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, "50/50"; Ryan Gosling, "Crazy, Stupid, Love"; Owen Wilson, "Midnight in Paris."
