Opera lovers are in for a treat at Cinema Nouveau theatres this January. Exclusive screenings of Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) and Aida take place on 19 January and 26 January respectively.
These grand opera productions are filmed at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and past creations have received great acclaim and gained recognition globally.
Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) is a new production by director David Alden and is conducted by Fabio Luisi. The opera portrays Guiseppe Verdi’s vivid dream of jealousy and vengeance. It stars Sondra Radvanovsky as Amelia, Marcelo Álvarez as Gustavo III, Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Anckarström, Stephanie Blythe as the fortune teller Ulrica and Kathleen Kim as the page Oscar.
The big-screen version of Aida is also conducted by Fabio Luisi. The popular opera is set in ancient Egypt, and the production follows the story of an enslaved Ethiopian princess named Aida, played by the Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska. Olga Borodina sings Aida’s royal rival, Amneris, and Roberto Alagna is the hero Radamès, who must choose between his love for Aida and his duty to his country.
Each of these productions will be screened exclusively at select Ster-Kinekor and Cinema Nouveau theatres countrywide.
