A new short film installation by South African filmmaker and academic Jyoti Mistry is on display until 20 January at GoetheonMain at Arts on Main in Johannesburg.
In April 2002, local entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth launched aboard the Russian Soyuz TM-34 mission for a nine-day, 21-hour and 25 minute trip into outer space. In a gentle, disembodied voiceover, he recounts his experiences of coming to understand Earth afresh by venturing away from it. In this unusual avant-garde short Mistry provides a moving and quietly stated environmental message through beautiful and somewhat unearthly imagery.
Mistry has made critically acclaimed narrative, documentary and experimental films. Her installation work draws from cinematic traditions but is often re-contextualised for galleries and museums that are outside of the linear cinematic experience.
