Animated local film Liyana wins at LA Film Festival

Liyana, directed by Amanda Kopp and Aaron Kopp , has won the Documentary Award at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival ahead of the 38th edition Durban International Film Festival (13-23 July), which is Africa’s oldest and biggest annual film festival.
Liyana is an animated African tale that was born in the imaginations of five orphaned children in Swaziland who collaborate to tell a story of perseverance, drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams.
The film has been shortlisted to be screened at this year’s DIFF and will be the competing in the Fiction Feature category.

“The news of Liyana winning this International award ahead of this year’s DIFF, which will focus on women led films in the African context, is further confirmation that we indeed are on the right track in terms of affording women filmmakers the opportunity to own the narratives of our stories on the DIFF stage.” says DIFF festival manager, Ms Chipo Zhou

Leading the production crew is Thandie Newtown who has received many awards for her work as an actress and producer on a number of Hollywood films including, The Pursuit of Happyness, Mission Impossible to name but a few. The cast boasts amongst it renowned storyteller and poet, Gcina Mhlophe whom is also the film’s story advisor.

Liyana will be screened at the Playhouse Theatre on 15 July 2017 at 12h00; at Gateway Commercial on 20 July 2017 at 18h00 and; at Musgrave Centre on 23 July 2017 at 16h30.
