Right2Know media freedom workshop
Tue, 07 Feb 2012 15:57
In February 2011 South Africas Right2Know Campaign National Summit resolved to broaden its focus from the Protection of State Information Bill (aka the Secrecy Bill) to campaign for the free flow of information - including campaigning for a free and diverse media that can serve the information needs of all living in south Africa.
Says Right2Knows Mark Weinberg: We hear a lot in the media about various government threats to media freedom, from the Secrecy Bill and proposed Media Appeals Tribunal to political interference in public service broadcaster SABC and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). We hear less in the media about other threats to media freedom posed by the monopoly ownership of the press and the commercialisation of the SABC and community media.
To this end Right2Know will host a workshop on Media Freedom and Diversity on 14 February in Cape Town where these issues will be unpacked and Right2Knows campaign response will be revealed.
The workshop will run from 9am to 4pm at the AIDC Solidarity Centre, 129 Rochester Road, Observatory, Cape Town.
As places are limited please contact Mark Weinberg on 0214475770 or email mark@aidc.org.za to secure you place.
In preparation for the workshop please see the R2K discussion document on media freedom / diversity online at http://www.communitymedia.org.za/alt-media-resources/274-media-freedom-diversity-and-the-r2k- ).
