The Christian-themed South African film, Angus Buchan’s Ordinary People, directed by FC Hamman, made the number six spot in the local box office Combined Top 10 over its opening weekend (6 to 8 April). It was released with 62 prints and made an impressive R837,426.
Meanwhile, after eight weeks of release, the two South African hits, Material (30 prints) and Semi-Soet (31 prints), had made R7.3m and R8.9m respectively as at 8 April. This is only the first week since their release that the films have not featured in the Combined Top 10, having opened in the Top 5.
The biggest earner over the past weekend was new release American Pie: Reunion (63 prints) which made R2.1m. It was followed by Dr Seuss: The Lorax (including 3D) (76 prints) at R1.7m; Wrath of the Titans (3D) (99 prints) at 1.4m; new release Titanic (3D) (40 prints) at R1.1m; and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (including 3D) (62 prints) at R1.3m.
