Ingrid Jonker biopic on circuit

Black Butterflies, Dutch director Paula van der Oest's biopic of tragic South African poet Ingrid Jonker, made R62,151 in its first weekend of release in South Africa. It was released on 21 October with eight prints.

The Rowan Atkinson comedy, Johnny English (84 prints), retained its number one spot in the Combined Top 10 over the weekend. It has made just over R5m in two weeks.

Two 3D releases made the number two and three spots – The Smurfs (97 prints) and The Three Musketeers (74 prints). The former made R1.4m and the latter, R983,600.

In fourth and fifth spots were new releases Contagion (25 prints), which made R483,109 and Killer Elite (40 prints), which made R439,211.

In the meantime, the South African film, How To Steal 2 Million (9 prints), has been on release for seven weeks and had made R1.6m as at 23 October.

Other films of interest to the local film industry are The Bang Bang Club (1 print), which is at R1.3m after a massive 14 weeks on release, and The First Grader (9 prints) at R533,160.

The DRC-made Viva Riva! (3 prints) has made R108,963 to date.
