ITU Telecom World 2011

South Africa will have a National Pavilion at the upcoming International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) Telecom World, which takes place from 24 to 27 October at the Geneva PALEXPO, Switzerland.

Other countries with National Pavilions include Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burundi, China, Czech Republic, Djibouti, Ghana, Geneva, Switzerland, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Malawi, Malaysia, Namibia, Nigeria, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Rwanda, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda and Zambia. There will also be Thematic Pavilions focused on areas like smart living, health and education.

Some 250 global leaders spanning heads of state and government, ministers, city mayors, industry CEOs and technology gurus are expected to attend the event.

Delegates will have the opportunity to hear from influential players from around the world including Carlos Slim Helϊ (chairman and CEO, Telmex and Amιrica Mσvil), Neelie Kroes (VP, European Commission), Angel Gurrνa (secretary-general, OECD), Professor Jeffrey Sachs (special adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General for the Millennium Development Goals), Wang Jianzhou (chairman, China Mobile), Internet pioneer Robert E. Kahn, and heads of UN agencies including Irina Bokova (director-general, UNESCO), Dr Margaret Chan (director-general, World Health Organisation), Francis Gurry (director-general, WIPO), and Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the UN Population Fund.

Industry leaders taking part in the event include Alcatel-Lucent, China Mobile, China Potevio, Cisco, Datang, Du, Ericsson, Etisalat, Fiberhome, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, NTT Group, NTT DoCoMo, Qtel, RIM, Satorys, Swisscom, Telkom SA, Turk Telecom, TDIA, and ZTE.
