Small blue dudes blitz box office

In line with its amazing box office performance worldwide, the animated adventure comedy The Smurfs (including 3D) had an enormous opening at the South African box office over the weekend of 30 September to 2 October. The film, released with 111 prints, made a staggering R7.2m.

The romcom Friends with Benefits (64 prints) was the second biggest earner over the weekend with just under a million. Its cumulative box office after three weeks is R4.7m.

Third biggest earner was another 3D release, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (48 prints), which made R568,948 over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the UK-Kenya-SA co-production, The First Grader (17 prints) has made R264,000 after two weeks of release, while the South African film, How to Steal 2 Million (13 prints) has made R1.4m after four weeks of release.

Afrikaans film, Saak van Geloof (3 prints), has made R276,734 after four weeks of release.

On circuit for 11 weeks, the true life apartheid story, The Bang Bang Club (1 print), has made R1.3m.
