ANC punts media appeals tribunal

Wed, 01 Feb 2012 10:32

Business Day reports that South Africa’s ruling ANC party is continuing its push for an independent media appeals tribunal to regulate the country’s print media.

This was the message from an ANC delegation at the Press Freedom Commission hearings in Johannesburg on 31 February.

The delegation stressed that the regulation would be independent ‘unencumbered by commercial or political party interests’ and that it would not be state regulation of the media. Such an independent body could, according to party spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, be set up like the public protector and the Independent Electoral Commission.

ANC’s Jessie Duarte accused South Africa’s print media of being characterised by shabby journalism with a lack of accountability.

The question is – who will get to appoint the “independent” tribunal?
