MARTIN CHEMHERE writes…Nyaminyami Amaji Abulozi (Nyaminyami and the Evil Eggs), a film by Zimbabwe’s Tsitsi Dangarembga, had its world premiere on 22 November in Harare.

The premiere coincided with the one-week run of the International Images Film Festival (IIFF) for Women that ran from 18 to 26 November.

Following the premiere the film, which was produced by Nyerai Films in collaboration with Filmgramm, was scheduled to screen as part of an outreach initiative in Binga, Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland North, to an audience of about 5,000 people.

An adaptation of ancient Tonga folklore and based on the famous legend from the Zambezi River Valley, the film is entirely shot in the language of the Tonga people. It is the second part of the Kare Kare Zvako trilogy.

The third chapter in the series, Mud Wife, is in development. Meanwhile, Kare Kare Zvako Mother’s Day has been to numerous film festivals worldwide and received several prestigious awards, including the Golden Dhow at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF).

States Dangarembga: “Kare Kare Zvako has proved that folk tales and legends are perfect sources of material to achieve originality and easy access by different audiences”.
