Ghana and Zambia are currently accepting entries for the Young Commonwealth Competitions 2012, which includes a film category.

Organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society, the competition encourages young people to use their creative talents in filmmaking, writing or photography to respond creatively to global challenges.

The Vision Awards challenges filmmakers to make a short film of up to 4 minutes on a developmental theme, and is open to actual and prospective filmmakers from the Commonwealth aged 30 and under.

Jessica Smith, communications assistant at the Royal Commonwealth Society says that 2012 not only marks the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her 60th year as head of the Commonwealth, but all entries into the Young Commonwealth Competitions will also be part of the world’s biggest history project, the Commonwealth Jubilee Time Capsule.

“Over the years winners have often been those picking up a camera or putting pen to paper for the first time. The judges look for a creative spark, a unique insight or a bold idea,” states Smith.

Themed Connecting Cultures, all entries must relate to a single day in the last 60 years since Her Majesty ascended to the throne on 6 February 1952. The deadline for entry is 1 May 2012.
