A scene from the Shield RugbyWell known South African director of photography (DOP) Rob Malpage has joined Frieze Films as a director.
This offers an exciting opportunity for agencies according to Frieze films executive producer Jo Barber. She describes it as the biggest move of its kind in years.
Malpage has had a long-standing relationship with Frieze from his time as junior DOP at the company to becoming one of South Africas most respected cinematographers.
From his early breakthrough start on Yizo Yizo, Malpage has worked with top directors and built an extensive reel of quality work as well as winning LIA cinematography silver craft awards for BMW Free Diver & BMW Test Pilot. His knowledge and command of the shooting experience puts him at an advantage to really deliver on projects.
Malpage has always maintained an interest in directing and became involved in music videos and co-direction of commercials over recent years, the most notable for Die Antwoord and MTN Stickies (which received a D&AD entry).
In his 2011 start as director he has already completed a mammoth cross-country shoot for SAT, a corporate Standard Bank commercial with an on-camera logistical element and a Shield Rugby sponsorship commercial with the Springboks.
Malpage will continue to be DOP for international clients and feature films but will focus exclusively on his directing career locally.
