Keynote - DTT ( Digital Terrestrial Migration)
Sithembiso Manzini, Director of the Digital Migration Project, Department of Communications
A session at the Screen Africa Technology + Production Conference will provide an update of South Africa's migration from analogue broadcasting to digital terrestrial television (DTT), which is scheduled to launch commercially as from April 2012. This session will look at the background of five years of delays in the country's digital migration project and will cover the following issues: ICASA regulations; GE 06 frequency plans; two national DTT multiplexes (approximately 20 channels per multiplex); the DVB-T2 transmission standard; DTT decoder (lengthy approval of specs by SANS; manufacture of decoders; and government subsidy model for the poorer households); DTT network delivery; and the dual illumination period until analogue signal is switched off in December 2013.

Media Asset Management for the Mid-Sized Production
Bryson Jones, the 'Hi-Def Cowboy,'
The collection and management of digital assets has become a growing concern for any modern production, but until now most small to midsizedproductions have taken a 'wait and see' approach. The initiatives of large-scale networks and producers have been well documented and thismarket is well served, but these solutions have been largely out of reach for most digital content producers. In this session, we will address DigitalAsset Management concepts and real-world solutions for the smaller producer. |
Kevin Duggan, Specialist in Archiving Workflows & Digital Asset Management
Currently his clients include some of the largest media companies in the world. NASCAR, SONY, TURNER BROADCAST, NBC, BBC, RED BULL TELEVISA and many others and he consults world wide on archiving workflows and all aspects of Digital Assets Management. He has a large practical and philosophical knowledge of the industry and has built end to end workflows for many small shops to some of the giants encompassing multiple petabytes of data. He is keen that the lessons of the past are not lost as we move forward into these new uncharted territories of tapeless and file based workflows and the role that metadata will play within it. |
Media Asset Management broadcast & producer dialogue
Bryson Jones, the 'Hi-Def Cowboy,'
This session will also open a dialogue between the broadcast networks and producers to address the problems of digital delivery, as we blendenterprise-level broadcast solutions with desktop video creation tools in the modern production workspace. |
3D PRODUCTION
Marius van Straaten - Stefan Nel- Russel Bowden - Shaun de Ponte
A practical workshop which shows delegates what it takes to shoot 3D in the field. The workshop will bring delegates up to speed on the latest 3D techniques and the possible future of 3D.
After an overview by Marius van Straaten of current 3D trends and future scope, Stefan Nel and Russel Bowden will demonstrate the set up of a 3D camera rig. Common pitfalls, mistakes and user tips will be highlighted.
Using the 3D camera rig, Shuan de Ponte will take participants through the challenges of 3D on set monitoring. Variables like correct and incorrect interaxials and convergence points will be demonstrated.
The critical variables and pitfalls of shooting 3D will be discussed. The workshop is pitched at an introductory level.
