Main Purpose of the Job

The Product Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the product development roadmap for assigned Kwese Digital Products and Services. They will work with key stakeholders within the Kwese business to ensure that business requirements are identified, and suitable solutions are developed and executed on time and to specification. They will be responsible for identifying and managing relationships with key vendors and the launch of new features and commercial opportunities across the assigned Kwese Digital Products and Services. The Product Development Manager will also be directly involved with the creation and idea generation for new, innovative online products.

Description of Tasks

Key Result Areas and Responsibilities

• Is a member of the Kwese Digital Product Development team led by the Head of Product Development
• Ongoing contact with the SA and Pan-African product managers to understand what commercial, technology and editorial product developments are planned, and the progress against those underway.
• Work with Publishing Directors to create, spec, and implement local product initiatives – designed to drive audience engagement and commercial success on Kwese Digital channels.
• Accountability / ownership of the products / services and the processes involved (ideation to deployments and maintenance requirements.
• Develop and implement innovative (future-proof) product strategies that are designed to scale and to serve the allocated Kwese brand, across multiple territories, touching a diverse target audience with unique traits and requirements.
• Communicating the above plans to the Kwese Digital management team and other local stakeholders and working with them to prioritise/decide what to implement locally
• Awareness of competitive activity and any trends that may be of benefit to the brands.
• Create business cases against SA and Pan African projects where a local resource is required.
• Works with the Operations Team to plan, specify and deliver product development plans.
• Responsible for presenting requirements to key stakeholders and gaining sign off.
• Tracks performance of new product/commercial developments to assess success and communicates delivery against metrics to the management team

Key Decisions

• Decides on the change of strategic direction or adaption of processes, policies or procedures regarding the product portfolio.
• Decides on the steering of operational or other internal business unit inputs and collaboration in optimising product uptake and performance.
• Decides on the adaptation and streamlining of product performance to optimise uptake, usage and performance.

Key Contacts

• Internal customer relationships (Technology, Marketing, Product)
• Peer relationships with Digital Marketing Manager, Digital Publishers, the Kwese Sports, TV or on Linear Division
• Partners, suppliers and vendor relationships (cross functional management and IT development teams).


• Matric / Grade 12

Post school Qualifications

• A relevant tertiary qualification (i.e. BCom)
• An MBA will be advantageous

Experience and Skills

• Extensive Digital Product development experience, preferably in mobile.
• Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, ability to work as part of a team and work with stakeholders across all business units.
• Previous exposure or direct involvement in Agile development methodologies, such as Scrum, with a comprehensive understanding of Agile roles and outputs.
• Exposure to content management systems, API’s and responsive mobile and online portals / platforms.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects in parallel, often with changing requirements and priorities.
• Ability to deliver within tight deadlines.
• Ability to help customers prioritise projects.
• Ability to work with and communicate effectively with senior management.
• A willingness to innovate and explore new ideas.
• Technical and Digital aptitude and ability to translate business needs into clear requirements documentation
• Attention to detail and both product and functional specification experience. Analytical abilities, specifically around online analytic tools as well as experience with user-focused quantitative and qualitative research.
• Web usability and accessibility expertise and a user focused outlook.
