SABC CEO suspended again

Fri, 13 Jun 2008

Group CEO of public broadcaster SABC Dali Mpofu has received a third letter of suspension from the SABC board, according to Talk Radio 702. Mpofu’s previous two suspensions were overturned by the Johannesburg High Court in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, the Freedom of Expression Network (FXN) and civil society organisations picketed today outside SABC headquarters in Johannesburg and simultaneously in four provinces (Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and Free State) calling for the SABC board to step down.

According to a statement issued by the picketing organisations, the move was necessary "to register the fact that the SABC Board lacks the legitimacy that is necessary to resolve the current crisis at the SABC, and to call on the board to step down to make way for a more representative board. The pickets are also being organised to express solidarity with the SABC's staff, whose working conditions are being made intolerable by the SABC's internal strife."
