Warner Bros’ Blu-ray disc release of the classic John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda western, How the West Was Won, due in August, will include a ‘SmileBox’ version that will make the home entertainment screen look as if it were curved like a Cinerama screen of the 1950s/ 1960s.
Anyone old enough will remember how the Cinerama cinema screens wrapped around the audience’s field of vision. The Cinerama screens were so wide that they required three synchronised 35mm projectors to fill it. Cinerama cameras were designed to shoot three images simultaneously.
Only a few films were made for Cinerama, including titles such as It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Grand Prix and Khartoum.
